The FIVE-STAR rated Dr. Emma Sloop Fink Child Development Center provides full and part time day care service to Avery County residents requiring supplementary out-of-home care for children from age six weeks to five years. An after school program is available for students in Kindergarten through middle school.

The Emma Sloop Fink Child Development Center is a More At Four Program. The More At Four program was designed to provide quality educational experiences in order to enhance kindergarten readiness. The program is Free to 4- year- old children of families who qualify, community-based voluntary, and designed to prepare 4-year-olds in North Carolina for success in school.

The Center promotes an educational environment that provides developmentally, socially and physically appropriate care and supervision by caring, qualified staff who meet all state licensing requirements.

Prior to enrollment, the following forms must be filled out and returned to the Center:

  1. Application form
  2. Medical form & Immunization Record
  3. CCCFP Form
  4. Parent signature and permission form which includes a signed statement that the parent has read and understands the operating and parent involvement policies.
  5. Infant/Toddler schedule information on feeding, sleeping and toileting habits where applicable.

Standard of Operation

Dr. Emma Sloop Fink Child Development Center is certified by the State of North Carolina as a Five star childcare provider. This means that we meet all the state and federal requirements for the operation of a child care facility and have passed all requirements.

Days of Operation

The Center will be open Monday through Friday, year around, except for legal holidays. Our hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Center will open earlier when parents' schedules require an earlier opening time.

  • Memorial Day
  • July 4th
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday
  • Christmas (two days)
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Staff Development Trainings
  • Closings for Bad Weather

Listen to 102.3 FM, 1130 AM, WBTV TV Channel 3, or go to averyweather.com for announcements concerning the closing of school in the event of snow and ice.   We will close the After School and Day Care only if conditions are hazardous for driving. There may be some days of early dismissals. Please notice we are not listed with the Crossnore Academy. If we are delayed or closed; it will say Crossnore Child Development Center and Crossnore After School.

Parent Participation
We believe that on-going communication between parents and staff is the key to a successful program for children. Throughout the year, the staff will keep you informed about Center activities. Parents will be provided assistance regarding the developmental/educational needs of their child through regular communication. This will include periodic evaluations, parent/teacher conferences, observation visits, newsletters, meetings and programs. Parent bulletin boards and monthly newsletters will also provide current information. We encourage your visits, questions and suggestions.
General Conclusions
  1. Our Center is another place, besides home, where each child can be loved and protected.
  2. Teachers are loving, gentle and caring people.
  3. Each child is a worthwhile, competent individual and group member and has a place in society.
  4. Learning is a fun way to become aware of yourself, your body, your feelings and your world.
